Peter Carey fits into a small, distinctly odd category. He is one of the authors in my I Should Like His Books And Really Try But Ultimately Fail category. He is in illustrious company with Philip K. Dick, Michael Frayn and Alan Bennett.
I reviewed the new Library of American volume of Philip K. Dick's final novels. They were fascinating to read while I was reading them, but I can't imagine ever picking them up again.
Frank - I struggled through several of Dick's '60s and '70s novels during my science fiction phase. Like Kurt Vonnegut's stories I realised they were writing for an audience in which I was absent.
Bizarrely at the same time I was voraciously reading Robert Heinlein. Looking back I fail to remember why.
